Cognizant to invest Rs 500 crore to expand Hyderabad facility

In a major booster for the IT sector in the city, IT major Cognizant on Wednesday announced that it would be investing over Rs 500 crore in expanding its Gachibowli facility in the city to accommodate another 8,000 professionals over the next few years.

The IT major, which started it Hyderabad operations in 2002 with 180 people, currently employs 18,000 people across five facilities in the city. The Gachibowli campus is the sole facility owned by the company while the rest, spread out in Ameerpet and Hitec City area, are leased.

With its latest investment, the company will be adding a built-up area of 1.5 million sq ft on its 11-acre Gachibowli campus, which has an existing 2.25 lakh sq ft facility, the company said in a statement.

Currently, the Hyderabad campus is Cognizant’s primary center for industry aligned business process services.

Commenting on the expansion plans, Cognizant vice-chairman Lakshmi Narayanan said, “Cognizant’s investment in Hyderabad underscores our commitment to grow our operations in the city and tap into the region’s best-in-class talent. Our Hyderabad center is an important part of our integrated global delivery capability and represents our continued success in hiring the best talent to support our ever expanding range of services, industries, and geographies.” Through its centres in the city, the company provides a host of services like consulting, enterprise applications, IT infrastructure, and business process services to over 300 of its global clients in sectors spanning banking and financial services, insurance, retail, hospitality, manufacturing and life sciences.

This apart, the company has hired over 8,000 fresh graduates over the past five years from around 20 engineering, management, science, arts and commerce colleges in the region.

Wipro chairman Azim Premji met Telangana Chief Minister and discussed his company’s expansion plans in the Telanagana state.

Premji told K Chandrashekar Rao about his company’s planned expansion in Telangana to which the latter is said to have responded positively. KCR in turn said that in the near future, several IT parks would come up in Telangana. He also highlighted his government’s plan of making Hyderabad a 4G enabled city and said that he would have another round of discussions with Premji when his government finalises the industrial policy.

Premji congratulated KCR for achieving Telangana state and forming the government. Premji told the Chief Minister that besides the existing Wipro units in Hyderabad, the company will come up with more proposals for expansion

KCR also informed Premji about his government’s initiatives in IT and other industrial sectors, especially about the corruption-free single window clearance system and a chasing cell and has assured that Telangana would be made an attractive destination for investments by both national and international companies.

Chairman of the CK Birla group of companies CK Birla called on Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at the Secretariat on Saturday, 20th July 2014. He evinced a keen interest in investing in health care, cement and other sectors in the state. The Birla group chairman expressed satisfaction over the proposed industrial policy of the state and said it would be among the best in the country. The company’s managing director Deepak Khterapal also accompanied the business magnate.

During the meeting, Birla recalled his company’s association with Hyderabad and informed the chief minister about his interest in expanding his cement business in Telangana. “We are also planning to invest huge amounts of money in the health care and health care education sector,” Birla said and sought the cooperation of the government for the same.

The chief minister responded in a positive way to their plans and said the government would bring about a industry-friendly policy which would be simplified to prevent hindrances for lower level industrialists.

“Around 2.5 lakh acres of land, which are useful for industrial purpose, will be given to the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC),” he said and added that the government will take all initiatives to grant permissions to industries. KCR said the single window and chasing cell at the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) will be the best in the country and will aid in the speedy clearance of files relating to investments.

“The required permissions will be given to the concerned persons within two-three weeks,” the chief minister assured the industrialist and added that the process of granting permissions would be corruption-free. KCR also told the two-member delegation that the government would develop an industrial park like the one in China. Sources said that Birla evinced keen interest and expressed satisfaction over the explanation of the government’s industrial policy. Birla also said all industrialists were keen to make heavy investments in the state.

Anil Dhirubhai Ambani, chairman, Reliance Group, Monday called on Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao here and evinced interest in investing in the newly-created state, said officials.
.

The top industrialist assured the chief minister that he will contribute in the state government’s mission to rebuild Telangana. Ambani expressed his willingness to invest in electricity generation, infrastructure, industrialisation and media sectors, said a statement from the chief minister’s office. This was the first meeting by any key industrialist with Rao since he took over as the first chief minister of Telangana last month.

Ambani congratulated Rao and noted that like his late father Dhirubhai Ambani who came up in life with his struggle, he (Rao) also fought to achieve his goal of Telangana state.
.

KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, thanked Ambani and told him that his government is in the process of working out a comprehensive plan for the all-round development of Telangana. Rao said an industrial policy was being evolved and he would be looking forward for another meeting with him to chalk out an action plan for mutual cooperation.

Information Technology Minister K. Tarakarama Rao and chief secretary Rajiv Sharma were also present during the meeting.

Anil Ambani praised Telangana Chief Minister KCR to skies by comparing him with his father Dhirubhai Ambani, saying, “Like my father Dhirubhai Ambani, KCR has also politically grown step by step.” KCR welcomed Ambani’s willingness to invest in various sectors in the new State. Soon, the T-government would invite Anil Ambani for discussion, with specific proposals, he said.

Spurred by the interest shown by several domestic and global companies like Tatas, Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin, the Telangana government is planning to set up two more aerospace and defence clusters on the city’s outskirts in addition to the existing aerospace and precision engineering SEZ at Adibatla, said IT and panchayat raj minister K T Rama Rao here on Tuesday.

“In view of the growing interest in this sector, we have earmarked another 1,000 acres close to the existing aerospace park in Adibatla for new entrants. The Aerospace Park Phase-II, which will be developed by the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation at Ibrahimpatnam, will have all required infrastructure. While these two aerospace parks are at the south of the city, another aerospace park in the northern part is being planned,“ Rao said while addressing the 65th AGM of Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI).

The minister also pointed out that the state government will announce a separate policy for the defence and aerospace sector to spell out incentives for encouraging manufacturing activity in these areas.

Meanwhile, GMR founder chairman G M Rao said the group is planning to establish an aerospace training hub at its Shamshabad international airport premises to meet the biggest challenge of shortage of skilled workforce. “We are planning to establish a high quality aerospace training hub at Hyderabad airport with the help of French multinational Safran. Our team alongwith Safran has visited the worldclass aerospace training center in Morocco.In fact, we have developed a relationship with the Safran team in Morocco, and they are ready to guide us in creating the aerospace training institute in Hyderabad,“ he said. He sought the help of the Telangana government in setting up the institute and make Hyderabad a sought after destination for international aerospace firms.

After heads of Microsoft, Hinduja Group, Wipro and Tatas, the top executives of Atlanta-based beverage giant Coca-Cola Company, which owns brands like Thums Up, Sprite and Fanta, met Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to express the company’s intent to set up a mega plant with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore.

Coca-Cola executive vicepresident Irial Finan and its India regional head T Krishna Kumar called on the chief minister at the state secretariat to discuss the modalities of setting up the plant and sought the state government’s support, said a release issued by the state government. At the meeting, the company officials also assured the Telangana CM that Coca-Cola would participate in the community development programme of the government.

On its part, the state government assured full support to the company, including identifying land for the proposed plant. However, the Telangana CM ruled out permission to the plant for tapping ground water.

Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) managing director Jayesh Ran jan, who was present at the meeting, said the company is keen on investing in Telangana as it is the biggest market for Coca-Cola and 50% of its supplies to the state are currently sourced from its facilities from other states. “The company is interested in setting up a Rs 1,000 crore plant. The government will be identifying three to four sites for the plant along the Yellampally pipeline, which carries water from the Godavari river. Water from this pipeline will be used by the plant that requires 3 MLD water,” Jayesh Rajan told TOI.

Telangana chief secretary Rajeev Sharma and principal secretary to chief minister S Narsing Rao, Principal Secretary to CM, Jayesh Ranjan, Managing Director Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation were also present at the meeting with chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Coca-Cola officials.

Internet services company Google, global e-commerce major Amazon, global banking giant HSBC and others have decided to go ahead their expansion plans, which were stuck due to political uncertainty and issues relating to land allotment in Hyderabad.With the formation of Telangana state ending the political uncertainty and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government keen to create investment-friendly atmosphere, the big firms have started working out their plans.

Information Technology Minister K. Tarakarama Rao Tuesday said the problems relating to allotment of land for Google would be sorted out soon. Google plans to set up its own campus, which will be its first outside the US.The state government in 2007 had allotted it 20 acres land at Kokapet but this ran into legal trouble. “The matter will be sorted out soon,” the minister told reporters.

Last year, the then Congress government of united Andhra Pradesh had agreed to provide alternate land at Raidurg. It was immediately not clear if Google campus will come up at the original site or the one proposed last year.The global search engine giant employs 3,000 employees at three locations in the city and plans to double the headcount in five years.

The minister said the problem with regard to land allotted for Amazon would also be sorted out soon. The retail giant was 10.57 acres of land at Nanakramguda in 2005 by the then government but the company could not begin construction due to legal hassles over the land.The online retail giant Amazon plans to build a 1.6 million square feet facility, which will be its biggest facility outside its corporate headquarters in the US.

Amazon currently employs 4,000 people at its campus in the leased premises and intends to add 5,000 jobs at the proposed campus, which is expected to be completed by 2018.

KTR said HSBC was also working on plans for massive expansion in Hyderabad.

India’s biggest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) is also expanding its presence in Hyderabad at its new facility in the city. This will provide 28,000 new jobs in three to five years.
TCS already employs 26,000 people at four facilities in the city.

Rao said the government planned to develop Hyderabad as the topnotch IT destination in the country. It is working to develop small IT clusters around the city.On Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR), which the central government already sanctioned for Hyderabad.

He said the mega project was estimated to bring an investment of over 2 lakh crore in 15 to 20 years. It is expected to provide 15 lakh direct and 35 lakh indirect employment.The government is also drawing plans to take the IT growth to tier-II cities like Warangal and Karimnagar.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s leading software firm will double its capacity at its largest delivery centre in Adibatla, Hyderabad, said N Chandrasekaran, CEO and MD of TCS after a meeting with Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

“The capacity addition of 28,000 employees will happen over a period of three to four years,” said V Rajanna, vice president and regional head of TCS Hyderabad. They also mentioned about their new facility at Adibhatla on the outskirts of the city. The new facility is reported to be TCS’ largest delivery centre set up at a single location.
.

The new delivery centre commenced its first phase of operations on September 1 and has 27,000 seats and built over an area of 79 acres. The company with a headcount of over 3 lakh announced a projection of adding 55,000 employees in FY 2014-15. TCS presently has 26,000 employees across delivery locations in Hyderabad and adds around 3000 to 3,500 workforce annually, as per previous reports.

Meanwhile, KCR has asked the state’s DGP to set up one police station at Adibatla area immediately since, the location is becoming an IT hub and increasing number of women workforce, the statement issued by the government said.

Rao told the TCS chief that his government would be business and industry-friendly and would extend all the necessary support for expansion of TCS operations in the state.
